Analysis and Application of Motor Bearing Components
Motor bearings are the “joints” of the motor; component design, materials, bearing type, selection, and installation and maintenance all collectively determine motor performance.
Key Considerations for Motor Bearing Selection
Selection must comprehensively consider five key factors: load, rotational speed, precision, operating environment, and installation.
1. Load Type
Pure radial: deep-groove ball bearings, cylindrical roller bearings.
Radial plus axial: angular-contact ball bearings, self-aligning roller bearings.
Pure axial: thrust bearing.
Heavy-load, low-speed applications: roller bearings; light-load, high-speed applications: ball bearings.
2. Rotational Speed and Precision
High-speed applications (>3,000 rpm): Select low-friction ball bearings, small sizes, and precision grades (P5/P4).
Precision positioning (servo/spindle): paired angular-contact ball bearings with preload-controlled clearance.
3. Environmental and Special Requirements
Dust / Moisture: Select sealed type (ZZ/2RS).
Variable-frequency motor: Select insulated bearings (with a ceramic coating on the outer ring) to prevent shaft current from causing pitting and erosion of the raceways.
High temperatures: Select high-temperature grease (such as fluorinated grease) and metal cages.
4. Installation and Alignment
Shaft/bearing misalignment: self-aligning bearings.
Thermal expansion: Select bearings that allow axial float, such as NU-type cylindrical roller bearings.
Motor bearings are the “joints” of the motor; component design, materials, bearing type, selection, and installation and maintenance all jointly determine motor performance. Deep-groove ball bearings are the universal first choice; angular-contact and cylindrical roller bearings are suited to high-speed and heavy-load applications; insulated and self-aligning bearings are tailored for special operating conditions. Only by precisely matching the load, speed, and operating environment can the motor achieve efficient operation and long service life.
